Title of Activity: Discussion of Emotions

Reference Section:

1.http://www.childrenslibrary.org/icdl/BookPreview?bookid=bngwhns_00260007&route=text&lang=English&msg=

Grade Level: 1

Subject: Language Arts/Health

Brief Description of Activity:
Students will learn about the word emotion and the different emotions that are associated with that word. As a class we will access the website, and read the book online, using the smart board. We will stop and talk about different aspects of the story. We will then go onto Microsoft paint on the smart board, and I’ll have volunteers draw the different emotions on the board.

General Learning Outcome: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts.

Lesson Plan Objective:
1) Students will be able to identify what the word emotion means and be able to recognize what different emotions are.
2) Students will be able to respond to the text on line “When Sophie feels angry, really, really angry” by drawing the different emotions experienced within the story on the smart board. Students will be able to compare the emotions in the story to emotions in their own lives.
3) Students will be able to express those emotions through movement and will understand how to follow instructions through a “simon says” game.

ICT Outcomes:

C.7 - Students will use electronic research techniques to construct personal knowledge and meaning.

1.1 develop questions that reflect a personal information need
1.3 draw conclusions from organized information
1.4 make predictions based on organized information

P.3 - Students will communicate through multimedia.
1.2 create visual images by using such tools as paint and draw programs for particular audiences and purposes

Rationale for Computer Integration:

Computers are integrated for this class to help understand the story better by using the smart board and the website to give a hands-on look at the story. I will use the smart board and circle important information and stop to talk about it. I will also use the smart board to have the students create the different faces of emotion. This is a more interactive way to run the class as opposed to reading directly from the book and having them draw on paper.

Introduction

Hello! My name is Alisha Hornberger. I am 25 years old and am a native of Calgary. My major is English Language Arts but I also have a background in dance. I have a BA in Dance from the University of Calgary with a minor in English as well as a Broadcasting Diploma from SAIT in Calgary. I hope to teach both English and Dance in high schools. Dance, unfortunately, is not recognized as a teachable subject...yet, but I hope that once I graduate interest will be peaked and it will kick start a dance revolution within the schools. This is my 8th year of post secondary education, and I hope to graduate from this program in 2010.
